The CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace. As a unique collaborative of more than 500 CEOs of the world’s leading companies and organizations, we are proud that Norfolk Southern was the first railroad to make this commitment. We have agreed to take action to cultivate a workplace environment where diverse experiences and perspectives are welcomed and where employees feel comfortable and empowered to discuss diversity and inclusion.
As part of the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™, Norfolk Southern has committed to the following actions:
1. We will continue to cultivate our workplace to support open dialogue on complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion:
To encourage an ongoing dialogue on diversity and inclusion, we launched an internal communication site solely dedicated to diversity and inclusion topics. Employees can view resources, current initiatives, connect to colleagues, and participate in forum discussions.
2. We will implement and expand unconscious bias education:
We provide an unconscious bias workshop to new employees and the diversity and inclusion councils. We have also introduced an online Unconscious Bias course, which is a requirement for all managers in the company. We plan to continue expanding Unconscious Bias education throughout the company in the future.
3. We will share best known—and unsuccessful—actions:
We have published some recent NS initiatives, Inspire Summit | CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion and Creating Local Diversity & Inclusion Councils | CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion on the CEO Action site that detail some of our diversity and inclusion efforts. We look forward to sharing more as we continue along our diversity and inclusion journey.
