A Diversity Interview with Charlie Pride

Charles E. “Charlie” Pride is a road truck driver for Norfolk Southern in Knoxville. Pride and his coworkers on the “wheel truck” change out faulty freight car wheels on the spot, so that the equipment doesn’t have to go into the shop and can be quickly returned to service.

“Sevier Pride,” the newsletter that you produce for Knoxville yard employees, features people of different skills and backgrounds.
We print 250 copies of the newsletter, which is in its second year. Recognizing achievements and showing that we’re part of the same team is important. By doing that, I hope the newsletter helps keep up morale and build teamwork.

You have a long tenure at NS. What changes have you seen in that time?
I’ve worked in a lot of places, and I’ve been with Norfolk Southern 31 years. In that time I’ve seen things change drastically in terms of the opportunities available for advancement. I’ve noticed the most change in the last ten years. If you’re qualified for a position, you can get that position. I’m glad to see that the people coming up behind me will be able to benefit from that approach. That makes me proud.

How does that affect the workplace?
We’re stronger when we hire and promote people who are the most qualified, regardless of age, or race or other factors. We should always hire the best person for the job, and we should always promote the ones who know their jobs best.

What do you see ahead?
We’re moving in a positive direction. In the next five years, diversity in our workplace will be even better. I just wish I was going to be here to be part of it.

Do you ever get tired of people relating you to Charley Pride, the country singer?
No. I’m diverse in my music. If it relates to me, I enjoy it. I like country music. Because he uses my name, I guess I like Charley Pride’s music just a little extra.
