Norfolk Southern and Wabtec expand locomotive modernization program
ATLANTA and PITTSBURGH, August 26, 2026 — Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) and Wabtec Corporation (NYSE: WAB) today announced an expanded program to modernize 33 of the railroad’s DC-traction Evolution Series locomotives. As part of Norfolk Southern's fleet modernization strategy, the initiative will convert the units to AC-traction technology to improve performance, reliability, and efficiency.
"This investment will improve reliability, increase efficiency, and extend locomotive life, helping us deliver safe, dependable service for customers," said Brian Barr, Norfolk Southern Chief Operating Officer. "Together with Wabtec, we're continuing to invest in technologies that improve fleet performance and maximize the value of existing assets."
Wabtec will modernize the ES44DC locomotives with AC traction motors, upgraded control systems, and advanced digital technologies, converting the units into ES44ACMs. AC traction provides superior adhesion and hauling performance, particularly in demanding operating conditions. The upgraded locomotives will deliver higher productivity with lower lifecycle maintenance requirements. The modernization package will also enhance locomotive diagnostics and maintenance planning, helping improve fleet reliability.
“This new modernization program underscores the strength of our longstanding partnership with Norfolk Southern and our shared focus on delivering operational value,” said Sameer Gaur, President of Wabtec’s Freight Services. “By combining innovative technology, engineering excellence, and deep service expertise, we're helping our customer maximize the value of their assets while positioning their fleet for the future.”
Norfolk Southern was the launch customer for the original ES44DC locomotives in 2004. Since 2015, Wabtec and Norfolk Southern have collaborated on one of North America's largest locomotive modernization efforts, contributing to more than 1,000 DC-to-AC locomotive conversions. This agreement continues that expanded partnership.
By extending locomotive life and integrating more efficient technology, the modernization program supports Norfolk Southern's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity while advancing a more sustainable freight rail network.
The modernization work is being performed at Wabtec’s U.S.-based facilities. The first upgraded locomotive was shipped to Norfolk Southern this month, with the remaining deliveries continuing through 2027.
