Norfolk Southern makes USA TODAY America’s 2025 Climate Leaders List

For the third consecutive year, Norfolk Southern has been awarded a spot on USA TODAY’s list of America’s Climate Leaders. This prestigious award is presented by USA TODAY and Statista, the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider.

Announced on Earth Day, April 22, the 2025 rankings cover work from 2021 to 2023, highlighting our commitment to reducing emissions. Improvements in locomotive fuel efficiency and our investments in low-carbon biofuels and renewable energy helped us land on the list.

Norfolk Southern has long been a climate leader in rail, including:

  • The first to offer a carbon calculator to customers.
  • The first in North America to convert locomotives to battery-diesel hybrids.
  • The first to name a chief sustainability officer.
  • In March, we launched RailGreen, a first-of-its-kind solution to reduce emissions from customers’ supply chains.

“We’re proud to offer sustainable solutions that benefit our customers and our communities,” said Josh Raglin, Chief Sustainability Officer. “With continued investment in our railroaders, technology, and low-carbon energy, we will continue to reduce emissions.”
