Norfolk Southern’s Conneaut Bridge Replacement Wins 2024 MBA Building Excellence Award

Norfolk Southern’s Conneaut Bridge replacement project, conducted in partnership with contractor Mascaro Construction Company, LP, and architect HDR, has been recognized by the Master Builders’ Association (MBA) of Western Pennsylvania’s 2024 Building Excellence Awards.

The Conneaut Bridge, located on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, plays a vital role in our rail network, connecting Cleveland and Buffalo with approximately 20 trains crossing it daily, making it one of the busiest rail bridges in the region.

The original 1,320-foot bridge was fully replaced with a new 1,300-foot structure designed to last for more than 100 years. This new bridge not only ensures the continued efficiency of rail traffic but also highlights Norfolk Southern’s dedication to investing in Ohio’s infrastructure and communities.

“The Conneaut Bridge replacement is an investment in safety, Ohio, and our customers,” Ed Boyle, Norfolk Southern VP Engineering, said at the time of the bridge’s reopening. “This project represents progress, efficiency, and a continued commitment to providing safe, reliable, and resilient service throughout our network in the Buckeye State.”

“This project required extensive planning and careful coordination to complete the work in a way that mitigated disruption on a key part of our network,” said Ruth Brown, Norfolk Southern Chief Engineer Bridges & Structures. “The recognition from the MBA is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams to continually deliver high-quality projects designed to last for generations.”

Each year, Norfolk Southern invests an average of $1 billion into maintaining and improving its infrastructure. The work supports the company’s mission to maintain the highest standards of safety and efficiency across its rail network, providing reliable service to customers and powering the nation’s economy.
