Celebrating Independence Day on the rails in Philadelphia
Norfolk Southern welcomed thousands of rail fans and community members to Philadelphia on July 4th to celebrate America's 250th anniversary at one of the signature stops of Union Pacific's Big Boy Coast-to-Coast tour.
The celebration brought together Norfolk Southern President and CEO Mark George and Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena to recognize the role railroads have played in connecting communities and shaping the nation's history. As host of Big Boy No. 4014 on its journey across the East Coast, Norfolk Southern also showcased one of its six America 250 commemorative locomotives, The Bell No. 1776, and its historic rail car, the Marco Polo, giving visitors a unique opportunity to experience railroad history up close.
In our words
“Seeing thousands of people gather around Big Boy and Norfolk Southern’s America 250 locomotive series, including The Bell, is a powerful reminder of the role railroads and railroaders have played, and will continue to play, in shaping our country. We’re proud to help celebrate America’s 250th anniversary by honoring our shared heritage and the people, innovation and infrastructure that continue to connect communities, power the economy and create opportunities for generations to come.” — Mark George, President and CEO, Norfolk Southern.
