Childhood dream realized: Introducing the 2025 Thoroughbred STEM Scholar

555850 Scholars Program Winners 2025

For Chandler Hoffman, the path to Carnegie Mellon University began with a childhood dream—and a tech camp.

“When I was 9 years old, I attended a tech camp on campus and have always dreamed of returning here to pursue my education,” Chandler said. “This combination of excellent academics, supportive class settings, valuable career prospects, and a personal connection makes Carnegie Mellon the ideal place for me to pursue a career in civil engineering.”

This fall, that dream becomes reality. Chandler, from Mingo Junction, Ohio, will begin his studies in civil engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, a top-ranked institution known for its rigorous academics and strong ties to the engineering industry. He was drawn to the university’s small class sizes and its location in Pittsburgh, which offers abundant internship and job opportunities in the field.

Chandler is one of three recipients of Norfolk Southern’s prestigious $40,000 Thoroughbred STEM Scholarship, awarded annually to students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and community engagement.

The son of NS Conductor Christian Hoffman, Chandler has long been passionate about building, problem-solving, and helping others—qualities that have shaped both his academic and extracurricular pursuits.

“Chandler is an incredibly driven and intelligent individual who approaches challenges with creativity and focus,” said his father. “His determination and willingness to help others make him a natural leader and team player. With his passion for building and problem-solving, Chandler is destined to make a meaningful impact as a civil engineer.”

Since its launch in 2022, the Thoroughbred Scholars program has awarded $4.48 million in scholarships across Norfolk Southern’s 22-state network. In 2025, 100 students—children of the company’s dedicated railroaders—received $10,000 scholarships, with three standout students, including Chandler, earning the top $40,000 awards.
