Cool Solutions for Hot Markets: Norfolk Southern teams with Agile Cold Storage

The global cold chain logistics market—which involves the transportation, storage, and distribution of temperature-sensitive goods—is poised for significant expansion over the next decade. Experts project this market will grow from $368.1 billion in 2024 to $1,245.2 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate of approximately 14.5% during this period.
Norfolk Southern (NS) is preparing by investing in strategic partnerships and building upon an existing network of 74 cold storage facilities that we serve directly or through a short line partner.
Macon, Georgia is home to the latest example where NS is working with Agile Cold Storage to combine their cutting-edge technology with our powerful logistics network, improving the movement of perishable goods through the region. Agile’s new state-of-the-art warehouse is strategically located just 180 miles from the Port of Savannah and on the GC Railroad, where NS interchanges 7 days per week. The facility offers a variety of essential services, including crossdocking, blast freezing, case picking, and tempering. Currently, NS moves approximately 6,700 temperature-controlled carloads annually, and we anticipate that this facility will contribute approximately 500 carloads each year.
Don Schoenl, President and CEO of Agile Cold Storage, emphasizes the value of this partnership:
"Agile was founded to be a great partner for our team members, customers, and stakeholders. Our investment in the new, rail-served facility in Macon is a prime example. With Norfolk Southern’s support, we can extend our services to customers across the US and Canada, providing more efficient and reliable access to the Port of Savannah and retail and foodservice customers in Georgia and Florida."
Why rail?
The NS partnership with Agile represents many elements of NS’s broader capabilities. Our network’s extensive reach demonstrates the many ways NS is positioned to meet the evolving demands of growing markets.
In general, rail plays a key role in optimizing cold chain logistics. It offers consistent, reliable service with fewer delays from road congestion and can be customized with temperature-controlled options, ensuring perishable goods remain within the ideal range. Additionally, rail is one of the most fuel-efficient transportation methods, helping to reduce emissions and environmental impact.
