  • Former college football players at Norfolk Southern apply teamwork, leadership and discipline every day to help keep freight moving safely and efficiently.
  • Success in railroading, like football, depends on preparation, adaptability, and trusting teammates across the organization.
  • Norfolk Southern employees bring diverse experiences and skills to roles that support network performance, safety and customer service.

The helmets may have been traded for hard hats, but the lessons from the field remain part of the playbook for four Norfolk Southern railroaders.

Football requires preparation, accountability, adaptability, and trust in the people around you. Those same qualities are essential in the rail industry, where employees across departments and locations must work together to safely and efficiently keep freight moving.

From protecting employees and securing freight to supporting transportation crews, strengthening network operations and conducting railway investigations, these former college football players continue to rely on the skills they developed on the field. Their careers demonstrate that success in football and railroading begins with understanding your role, preparing for the unexpected and putting the team first.

To celebrate these former athletes, Norfolk Southern is also launching a social media carousel featuring custom player-card graphics inspired by classic football trading cards. Each card highlights an employee's college football background alongside their current role on the railroad, showcasing how the lessons learned on the field continue to support Team NS today.

The series highlights the varied backgrounds and experiences that strengthen Team NS, featuring employees who have translated lessons from college football into successful railroad careers. The player cards pair football photos with current railroad images, offering a unique look at how those experiences continue to shape their work and leadership across Norfolk Southern.

Where did you play (college/university), and during what years?

Ferrum Collage 2007-2011

How did you first get into your sport, and what kept you in it?

Grandfather and father were heavy influences on my love of Football, from a young age went to professional, college and high school football games, and that became all I wanted to do was watch and play football and sports in general.

Which skills from athletics show up most in your job today? (Discipline, teamwork, communication, preparation, resilience, etc.)

Accountability and commitment to a team are what I took most into my job today. On a football team you are accountable for your role on the team and in each play.

How does your sports background influence how you collaborate across teams?

Sports have a way of connecting everyone, whether through conversation, shared joy, trauma or distain for the other team/fans. I use sports as a form of an icebreaker in many interactions on the railroad.

What's a piece of feedback you received as an athlete that still guides you today?

The true measure of someone is the work they put in when no one is looking, anyone can act like they are involved can make a comment in a meeting or on a call, but your actions when no one is looking is what will set you a part and those who lack preparation will be exposed.

Where did you play (college/university), and during what years?

University of Tennessee (Knoxville, TN)

2003 to 2007

How did you first get into your sport — and what kept you in it?

I started playing football at 4 years old, as I was always bigger than most of my peers.  I played on teams of older kids that were my size.  I loved playing a sport that didn’t care where you were from, how much money you had, or who you knew.  Within the game, it was all about how much work you put in prior to the game, and it was you against your peer, with the outcome based on your ability to exert your will on your opponent.

Which skills from athletics show up most in your job today (discipline, teamwork, communication, preparation, resilience, etc.)?

The top three are most prevalent in success for my team, and I are communication, resiliency, and teamwork.  Working for NS responsible for police operations protecting our employees and securing our freight requires our best every time.  Meeting this expectation begins with communicating across diverse backgrounds in various locations with ever changing dynamics in the multitude of communities we operate through.  The second portion of this is the resiliency to make sure we are handling adversity and not only meeting that challenge but continuing to learn from it to be better next time it presents itself.  The third without a doubt is Teamwork.  No one person, no matter how great, could win a football game at any level, and in order to be successful on the railroad, we have to embrace the need to form teamwork well beyond our local team, department, and throughout the division.

How does your sports background influence how you collaborate across teams?

My background from playing football in Tennessee greatly improved my ability to communicate and garner influence in the team made up of people from across the country.  I have used this experience to direct my team to accomplish our mission in various challenging environments.  Successful teams are made up of a bunch of leaders that aren’t focused on who gets the credit but want to do what it takes to accomplish the mission it has been tasked with.  The team first mentality is the full integration of collaboration.

What’s a piece of feedback you received as an athlete that still guides you?

I have two quotes that I hear repeatedly in my head from the coach’s past.  The first one is, “winners never quit, and quitters never win”. This is simple; life will undoubtedly knock you down, but you only lose if you quit trying.  The second quote is, “you are either getting better or getting worse, you are never staying the same”.  I apply this quote at work, acknowledging that if I don’t attack the day to become a better railroad police officer, I missed an opportunity therefore I got worse.  In that same aspect at home, I acknowledge that my relationships with my wife and kids are dependent upon me, striving each day to be a better husband and father because if not I get worse.  As each day passes the world and people around you grow, we must choose to grow positively to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

What sport did you play?
Football – Wide Receiver, Track - Sprinter

Where did you play (college/university), and during what years?
Western Michigan University, 1998-2001 (22 years)

How did you first get into your sport — and what kept you in it?
My parents put me into sports (basketball, football, soccer, and track and field) at a young age, but I always had a desire to play since I did not like being in the house. When I was growing up, we just played sports every day after school and in the summertime from sunup to sundown. I kept playing because it was fun, created friendships, a family tradition/legacy, and I was pretty good.

Which skills from athletics show up most in your job today ?
I am not sure if there is one that shows up more than the other. I think overall athletics provides a different mindset in general where you can or have to switch/adapt to the situation you are in. In the rail industry change is constant and can be instantaneous, so I feel my skills that I have acquired help me often.

How does your sports background influence how you collaborate across teams?
By being able to adapt and communicate with individuals from all walks of life and understanding everyone plays a role (major or minor) in getting to and through the finish line.

What’s a piece of feedback you received as an athlete that still guides you?
We were provided with quotes and sayings all the time that have stuck with me.
“What’s Important Now” – (W.I.N)
“Do your 1/11th!"
“Short term decisions equal long-term consequences”
“It’s who we are, it’s what we do, it’s how we live.”
