Grants on Track: Impact in action in Cincinnati, Ohio

Helping to build strong, resilient communities across our network

This month, as part of our “Grants on Track” series, we’re featuring Back the Heroes Rumble, a 2023 Safety First grant program recipient. Back the Heroes Rumble aims to honor law enforcement officers, fire fighters, the military, and their families. Last year, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based nonprofit received $5,000 to support its Operation Open Arms initiative, which provides lifesaving equipment to first responders across the region.

Last month, Norfolk Southern Regional Vice President State Relations Jason Wazelle met with representatives from three Ohio-area fire departments that received emergency equipment through the grant funding. “Seeing firsthand how our Safety First grant program supports local first responders is incredibly rewarding,” said Wazelle. “These grants not only provide essential equipment but also strengthen the resilience of our communities.”

The New Miami Fire Department in Hamilton, Ohio, was provided with a Milwaukee Tool MX Fuel Rocket Tower Light/Charger to significantly enhance on-the-scene fire safety. This essential equipment helps ensure that firefighters can see clearly in critical situations, such as search and rescue operations.

The St. Clair Township Fire Department in Butler County, Ohio, received ten new communication devices to improve coordination and response times and ensure that vital information is relayed quickly and efficiently during emergencies.

The Enon-Mad River Township Fire and EMS Department in Enon, Ohio, was provided with six ballistic vests for their emergency medical service staff to provide necessary protection in critical situations.
