Norfolk Southern railroaders at Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, recently achieved a major safety milestone: one million work hours without a reportable injury.

This accomplishment reflects the focus, discipline, and commitment the team brings to its work every day. In an environment where over 475 railroaders perform complex repairs using heavy equipment and specialized tools, reaching one million injury-free work hours is a testament to their skill and dedication.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment and a strong example of the pride this team takes in doing the job the right way,” said Jennifer Bailey, Director of Mechanical Operations at Juniata. “The work at Juniata is demanding, and this milestone shows what is possible when safety is built into every task, every conversation, and every decision.”

Juniata is one of the world’s largest locomotive repair facilities, spanning 70 acres, including 30 acres of covered shop space. The work done here is central to maintaining Norfolk Southern’s fleet through major repairs, component rebuilds, modernization projects and other efforts that extend the life of locomotives and return them to service across the network.

Those efforts help ensure locomotives are ready to move freight for customers across Norfolk Southern’s network, supporting the goods, industries, and communities that depend on rail service every day.

The milestone belongs to the skilled railroaders making it all possible, including machinists, electricians, sheet metal workers, boilermakers, carmen, firemen and oilers, clerks and many others who support the shop’s operations each day.

While the number itself is impressive, the achievement points to something bigger — a culture where safety is a shared responsibility and a value the Juniata team puts into practice every day.
