Meet Norfolk Southern’s 2026 Distinguished Thoroughbred Scholars

Each year, Norfolk Southern's Thoroughbred Scholars program recognizes the children of railroaders who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to their communities. Among this year's 103 scholarship recipients, three students were selected to receive the Community, STEM, and HBCU Distinguished Scholar awards, earning scholarships of up to $40,000 over four years. This year's recipients are pursuing careers in education, architecture, and cybersecurity, preparing to make an impact in their chosen fields.

Community Scholar:

Lauren Leonetti

Lauren Leonetti, daughter of Electronic Technician – Communications Ronald Leonetti of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, received this year's Community scholarship. She is majoring in Early Childhood and Special Education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, preparing for a career helping students reach their full potential.

"Lauren is our caring, confident, and sweet daughter who is never afraid to try something new. She works hard both in and out of the classroom and we know that one day she will become a great teacher. She is already a great person. We are very proud of her." – Ronald Leonetti

STEM Scholar:

Keegan Traxler

Keegan Traxler, son of Electrician Larry Traxler of Altoona, Pennsylvania, earned this year's STEM scholarship. He is studying Architecture at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

HBCU Scholar:

Justin Mathews

Justin Mathews, son of Engineer Jerry Mathews of Wilmington, Delaware, received this year's HBCU scholarship. He plans to attend North Carolina A&T State University to study computer science and cybersecurity, preparing for a career in one of today's fastest-growing fields.

"I would like to celebrate Justin today. I am so proud of all of the hard work he has put in that has given him this opportunity. His dedication and determination have opened new doors, and I can't wait to see how far it will carry him. Our family would also like to acknowledge and thank Norfolk Southern for this amazing opportunity." – Jerry Mathews
