Norfolk Southern, Front Steps team up to put Cleveland residents back to work

The Cleveland-based nonprofit used a Thriving Communities grant from Norfolk Southern to expand its Basic Job Training Program, helping residents experiencing homelessness gain the skills needed to secure employment and transition into stable housing.

Why it matters: Cleveland’s unemployment is higher than the national average. The Front Steps program equips participants with soft and hard skills—like resume writing, job search strategies, and confidence-building—to overcome barriers to employment and achieve long-term self-sufficiency.

Zooming in:

  • 125 individuals directly supported
  • Funds covered training materials, instructor fees, transportation, and small living stipends
  • Program capacity increased to serve more participants
  • Updated training resources and technology

The big picture: The grant not only enhanced the quality of training but also contributed to the long-term sustainability of the program, ensuring Front Steps can continue helping Cleveland residents land jobs years to come.
