Norfolk Southern donates $25K to support flood recovery in West Virginia
On June 14, a sudden and intense downpour brought four inches of rain to the Northern West Virginia Panhandle communities of Valley Grove, Triadelphia, and Wheeling in just half an hour. The resulting flash floods caused devastating damage — claiming lives, destroying homes and vehicles, and leaving a trail of destruction. In the aftermath, local organizations and first responders quickly mobilized to deliver vital aid and support to those impacted by the storm.
To aid in recovery efforts, Norfolk Southern donated $25,000 to the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley (CFOV). Our contribution will support the Foundation’s Disaster Response and Recovery Fund. The fund provides direct assistance to nonprofits that are active in disaster response and recovery and that support individuals impacted by the disaster.

With a significant operational footprint across West Virginia and a strong partnership with state and local leaders, Norfolk Southern’s investment in these recovery efforts is part of our long-standing commitment to these communities throughout the Mountain State.
Specifically, the CFOV will use resources from the fund to partner with nonprofit organizations like the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, Catholic Charities, and the House of the Carpenter.
“This donation shows how much Norfolk Southern cares about the people of West Virginia, and the partnership West Virginia has with Norfolk Southern,” said West Virginia Delegate Shawn Fluharty. “They have stepped up to the highest degree.”
“Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this devastating event,” said Kristin Wong, Norfolk Southern Community Impact Director. “We deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley and all those working to support the community’s recovery from the flooding.”
Norfolk Southern is a proud Disaster Responder partner with the American Red Cross. Through this partnership, Norfolk Southern provides access to essential disaster preparedness resources, supporting the Red Cross in preparing for, responding to, and helping people recover from disasters big and small.
Our Employee Hardship Fund is designed to support our team members during challenging times — such as natural disasters, medical emergencies, or other qualifying events — ensuring help is available when it’s needed most. The activation will retroactively cover employees impacted by this incident and others.
