Norfolk Southern first ever railroad to win a Fast Company Design Award

A locomotive moves through a DTI portal near Jackson, Georgia. The portals use advanced technology to prevent railway issues and ensure safe train operations.

Technology in motion: Developed in partnership with Georgia Tech Research Institute, the portals use machine vision to transform railcar inspections. Equipped with trackside cameras and stadium lighting, the portals capture about 1,000 ultra-high-resolution, 360-degree images of each passing railcar. Our in-house AI algorithms then analyze those images for potential defects, transmitting results to the Atlanta-based Network Operations Center, where experts review the data and proactively address issues.

How it works:

• Speeds inspections: Trains can be scanned at up to 70 mph.
• Improves accuracy: 75+ AI algorithms help experts pinpoint issues with greater precision.
• Strengthens safety: Early detection reduces risk and keeps communities safe.
