Norfolk Southern first ever railroad to win a Fast Company Design Award
Norfolk Southern’s Digital Train Inspection (DTI) portals have been recognized in Fast Company’s 2025 Innovation by Design Awards, receiving an honorable mention in the Artificial Intelligence Design category.
Why it matters: The recognition spotlights how NS is applying AI and human expertise to make inspections smarter and operations safer.
An industry first: NS is the first railroad to appear on the Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Award list.

A locomotive moves through a DTI portal near Jackson, Georgia. The portals use advanced technology to prevent railway issues and ensure safe train operations.
Technology in motion: Developed in partnership with Georgia Tech Research Institute, the portals use machine vision to transform railcar inspections. Equipped with trackside cameras and stadium lighting, the portals capture about 1,000 ultra-high-resolution, 360-degree images of each passing railcar. Our in-house AI algorithms then analyze those images for potential defects, transmitting results to the Atlanta-based Network Operations Center, where experts review the data and proactively address issues.
How it works:
- Speeds inspections: Trains can be scanned at up to 70 mph.
- Improves accuracy: 75+ AI algorithms help experts pinpoint issues with greater precision.
- Strengthens safety: Early detection reduces risk and keeps communities safe.
Anil Bhatt, EVP and Chief Information and Digital Officer: “This recognition highlights how our innovation is transforming rail safety. DTI portals are a powerful example of how technology and human expertise come together to keep our network safe and reliable. By applying advanced AI and machine vision, we’re reimagining long-standing processes, enhancing safety, and making a lasting impact for our customers and communities.”
