Norfolk Southern grant delivering meals, hope in Pittsburgh

Over 30,000 meals and counting have come from Norfolk Southern’s latest donation to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, providing a critical boost for families, seniors, and individuals facing hunger.
Why it matters: In the Food Bank’s 11-county service area, 1 in 8 people — over 292,000 residents — are food insecure. Rising costs have made it harder for families to afford groceries, forcing many to make painful trade-offs between food and items like medication.
Partnering for good: The grant, part of Norfolk Southern’s Thriving Communities program, is the latest in 10 years of support for the Food Bank’s mission to fight food insecurity in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The Food Bank’s impact:
- 1,000+ partners serving 8,400+ households monthly
- SNAP assistance: Helping families access grocery benefits
- Drive-up distributions: 30 events across 14 communities
- Walk-up distributions: Monthly events offering fresh produce
- The Market: A pantry model serving 150 households daily
What’s next: Norfolk Southern employees will volunteer at the Food Bank on Sept. 11, continuing their hands-on support for the community.
What they’re saying: “Norfolk Southern’s generosity strengthens our ability to reach individuals and families who are struggling with food insecurity.” — Lisa Scales, President & CEO, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
