Norfolk Southern joins rail industry for historic America 250 locomotive gathering

Norfolk Southern helped bring America's railroad history to life as a sponsor and participant in the America 250 Locomotive Celebration this weekend at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina.

As one of the event's partners, we showcased The Stars & Stripes, one of our six America 250 commemorative locomotives, alongside specially painted locomotives from Class I, passenger, and short line railroads. The event marked the first time America 250-themed locomotives from across the rail industry were displayed together in one place, celebrating rail's enduring role in America's story. More than 10,000 rail fans attended the event.

Why it matters: America’s railroads share a history that stretches across generations. This gathering brings that history together in one place, with Norfolk Southern joining its industry peers to mark a milestone for the country and for rail.

Supporting railroad history

Our involvement extends beyond the locomotives on display. We recently committed $50,000 to support the North Carolina Transportation Museum and have contributed over $200,000 since 2024 to help preserve one of the Southeast's most significant railroad landmarks and expand opportunities for education and community engagement.

The Stars & Stripes engine pays tribute to a defining milestone in the nation’s history. It represents two and a half centuries of effort, growth, and determination shaped by people who kept building and pushing ahead.

The celebration took place at the historic Spencer Shops, a former Southern Railway steam locomotive repair facility with deep ties to Norfolk Southern’s railroad heritage. During the event, our team also welcomed visitors with America 250 merchandise giveaways and information about the company's ongoing anniversary celebration.
