Norfolk Southern rallies behind life-saving cause

NS behind life saving

From classrooms to rail crossings, Team NS was all in for Operation Lifesaver’s See Tracks? Think Train!® Week, held September 15–21. Railroaders across the company, including senior leaders and frontline employees, joined forces to raise awareness, protect communities, and help save lives.

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Chief Safety Officer John Fleps hit the airwaves, speaking with over 20 media outlets across our network to share critical rail safety messages.

  • Crossing blitzes took place in five cities: Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Augusta (GA), Bessemer (just outside of Birmingham, AL), and Roanoke (VA), where NS teams led by our community ambassadors partnered with Operation Lifesaver and local law enforcement to remind drivers and pedestrians to stay alert at rail crossings.

  • Our team was focused on reaching young people with this life-saving message, visiting three elementary schools in key areas to teach students how to stay safe around trains and tracks.
  • At our Atlanta HQ, which we lit red for rail safety, Team NS hosted information sessions, bringing rail safety education directly to our home base for employees, visitors, and customers.
  • And yes, NS Police K-9 Thorr joined the movement too—kicking off the week with his own tips for staying safe around tracks.

This week was a powerful reminder that rail safety is a shared responsibility. It’s one we take seriously every day. A huge thank you to all our volunteers across departments who stepped up to educate, promote, and encourage safe behavior around trains and tracks.

Let’s keep the momentum going. Rail safety education doesn’t stop when the week ends and neither does our commitment.
