Railway Age: John Orr is 2026 Railroader of the Year
Building a culture of success with a passion for people, process and service
Railway Age has published its 2026 Railroader of the Year spotlight on Norfolk Southern EVP and Chief Operating Officer John Orr, recognizing John’s commitment to operational excellence and the transformative improvements the NS team has made across our network.
“I begin with deep gratitude and genuine humility for this recognition,” John said. “This award reflects the dedication of our 19,000 railroaders who power Norfolk Southern every day. Our commitment, resilience and belief in what we can achieve together inspire me constantly. Across our company, we are building a culture where every voice matters, collaboration fuels innovation and continuous learning drives meaningful improvement. When people feel empowered to challenge assumptions and grow their capabilities, they create momentum that lifts the entire organization.”
In conversation with Railway Age Editor-in-Chief Bill Vantuono, John shared insights on the value of safety, intentional leadership, growth and building trust, as well as his appreciation for the work of Team NS in driving results.
“I am profoundly grateful for my deep roots in this industry and for the many colleagues, mentors and family members who have shaped me as a railroader,” John continued. “Their guidance reminds me that leadership is ultimately about serving others and creating the conditions for their success. Our future is brighter because of our committed people, and together, we are raising the value and capability of Norfolk Southern.”
“Team NS is proud to celebrate our COO, John Orr, being named Railway Age’s 2026 Railroader of the Year,” said CEO Mark George. “John’s roots in railroading and his transformative leadership continue to elevate our operations and develop our people. Today’s recognition is well‑earned for John and reflects the pride and professionalism of the people who run our railroad. Congratulations, John, and thank you to Team NS for all you do to keep us moving forward.”
