Turning curiosity into rail safety awareness at Pittsburgh’s Locomotion Weekend
By Chad Previch, Senior Communications Manager
Connecting train enthusiasts and families with rail safety education
Norfolk Southern joined over 1,000 train enthusiasts at Locomotion Weekend at Pittsburgh’s Kamin Science Center on Jan. 17–18 to promote rail safety through hands-on education.
The celebration filled the museum with model train displays and exhibitions from railroad clubs, creating an immersive environment where visitors could explore the history, mechanics and excitement of rail transportation.
Why it matters
- Rail safety education works best in settings that spark curiosity and learning.
- Reaching children and caregivers together helps reinforce safe habits that last.
How we showed up: At a shared NS–Operation Lifesaver booth, visitors learned:
- How to stay safe around railroad tracks and crossings.
- Why trains can’t stop quickly and why train-safety awareness matters.
- How communities and railroads have a shared responsibility for safety.
The bottom line: At Locomotion Weekend, NS turned train enthusiasm into meaningful conversations about rail safety, reinforcing our commitment to education, partnership and community safety.
