Building homes and hope across our network

In recognition of November as Homelessness Awareness Month, Norfolk Southern partnered with Habitat for Humanity across our network to help families achieve safe, affordable housing. From Ohio to Georgia, volunteers worked side by side to strengthen the communities we serve.

Why it matters: Safe, decent, and affordable housing is foundational for opportunity, well-being, and thriving communities.

Network-wide impact: NS railroaders rolled up their sleeves to build, paint, and landscape new Habitat for Humanity homes in need across six cities, including Cleveland, Chicago, Atlanta, Elkhart, Indiana, Birmingham, Alabama, and Pittsburgh.

  • 9 homes built or improved
  • 77 employee volunteers
  • 546 volunteer hours contributed

On top of this month’s efforts, NS has donated $1.73 million to organizations focused on housing insecurity in 2025.

What they’re saying

“Home is the foundation on which we build our lives. When companies like Norfolk Southern dedicate their time and talent, we’re able to further our efforts of building stronger communities and better futures across the U.S.” — Charlita Stephens-Walker, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and Cause Marketing, Habitat for Humanity International.

“Every build is a reminder that when we come together, we can create real, lasting change. It’s inspiring to see how our employees show up for their neighbors and support the need for safe housing in our communities.” — Kristin Wong, Director, Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact
