Creating opportunity: NS rallies leaders for college scholarships
Jackie Peets, NS Director of Employee Engagement, addresses attendees of the UNCF Vice Chair Meeting at NS’ headquarters in Atlanta.
The end of each year is fundraising season for the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) as millions of dollars to champion students are typically raised. To launch this important period in Atlanta, Norfolk Southern hosted business, civic and city leaders on Tuesday to preview signature events like the Mayor’s Masked Ball, outline fundraising goals and explore broader initiatives to support historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Unlocking potential: Jackie Peets, NS Director of Employee Engagement and a Florida A&M graduate, opened the meeting with heartfelt reflections on her HBCU experience.
“These scholarships don’t just ease financial burdens,” she shared, “they unlock potential, fuel ambition, and help shape the next generation of change-makers.” Her comments were followed by a fireside chat with leaders from the City of Atlanta, UNCF and several HBCUs.
Zoom out: NS’ support for HBCUs is deeply rooted in its mission to connect communities and build pathways to opportunity. Through programs like Thoroughbred Scholars and Trades on Track and direct university funding, the company continues to invest in the future of education and workforce development.
Building momentum: The meeting brought together vice chairs from across the region, each playing a pivotal role in advancing UNCF’s mission. Their leadership and dedication are instrumental in driving the success of events like the Mayor’s Masked Ball, which raises critical funds for scholarships and educational programs. The Mayor’s Masked Ball in Atlanta is the largest fundraising event in the nation for UNCF.
Looking ahead: The Masked Mayor’s Ball takes place Dec. 20. NS is this year’s title sponsor.
