Fultondale Fire & Rescue in Birmingham, Ala., has now received three consecutive Norfolk Southern Safety First Grants worth over $19,000 to strengthen the city’s emergency response capabilities.

Why it matters: Emergencies near railways and in remote areas demand speed and precision. With this equipment, firefighters can reach incidents faster, respond more safely, and protect both their city and the surrounding communities.

On track for impact

  • 2023: A $5,000 grant was used to purchase the department’s first drone camera, marking the start of Fultondale Fire & Rescue’s drone program. The drone allows firefighters a safer way to assess emergencies, locate injured or missing people, and plan with a bird’s-eye view of potential hazards.
  • 2024: A $9,400 grant funded a new UTV. With off-road capabilities, it has already improved response times to railway incidents, enabled rescues in wooded or storm-damaged areas, and enhanced brush fire suppression.
  • 2025: A $4,795 grant is adding a skid unit—a self-contained firefighting system with a water tank, pump, and hose—to the UTV, turning it into a stronger tool for wildfire response in remote or hazardous terrain.

What they’re saying

Fire Chief Justin McKenzie expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “The Norfolk Southern Safety First Grant has been a game-changer for Fultondale Fire & Rescue. The drone, UTV, and now skid unit significantly expand our ability to respond to emergencies in challenging environments, ultimately enhancing the safety and well-being of our railroad coverage and our entire community. We are deeply appreciative of the company's commitment to supporting first responders.”
