Expanding mental health access in Greater Cleveland
Access to mental health support can be life-changing, but for many, it remains out of reach. NAMI Greater Cleveland is helping close that gap with support from Norfolk Southern’s Thriving Communities grant program. In 2025, the organization received a $10,000 grant to expand mental health outreach and education across the region.
Why it matters: Mental health challenges affect individuals and families across every community. Expanding access to trusted support helps people take the first step toward stability and well-being.
Connecting people to resources
The grant supports training, materials, and supplies needed to expand programs that serve individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. Programs include:
- Support groups: Community-based groups for populations that have historically experienced limited access to mental health resources.
- Educational programs and outreach: Sessions, events, and discussions focused on mental health topics relevant to historically marginalized communities, delivered through platforms ranging from webinars to radio.
- Helpline support: Sustaining the NAMI Greater Cleveland Helpline, providing individuals and families with access to guidance and support when they need it most.
The impact
NAMI Greater Cleveland is helping individuals move from isolation to connection, and from uncertainty to support. These programs provide tools, knowledge, and safe spaces that empower people to better understand their mental health and take steps toward recovery.
What they’re saying
“Support from the Norfolk Southern Foundation has played a huge role in helping NAMI Greater Cleveland better reach people where they are, through culturally responsive education, peer support, and compassionate guidance. Because of this support, more individuals and families across our community—especially those who have faced barriers to care—are finding connection, understanding, and hope. We’re seeing more people reach out, take part in support groups, and access important resources, which truly shows the impact this funding is making.” — Katie Jenkins, LSW, MSW, MPA, Executive Director of NAMI Greater Cleveland
