On Monday, June 9, Norfolk Southern employees at the McDonough Training Center welcomed participants from the House of Artists Foundation for an immersive, hands-on introduction to careers in the railroad industry. Attendees engaged directly with NS employees, toured training facilities, and even operated the NS locomotive simulator—experiencing firsthand what it’s like to be at the controls of a train.

Fostering Inclusion Through Outreach

This initiative reflects Norfolk Southern’s ongoing commitment to building a talented and inclusive workforce. By creating accessible pathways into the transportation industry, we’re helping to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to explore meaningful careers. Events like this are a testament to the power of community partnerships and the importance of inclusive outreach in workforce development.

The visit also builds on our continued relationship with the House of Artists Foundation, which received $20,000 in grants from Norfolk Southern since 2023 to support its mission of empowering autistic individuals through creative and career-focused programming.

What They’re Saying

“Skilled trades are essential to keeping Norfolk Southern’s operations running safely and efficiently. Through our investments in inclusive workforce development, we’re expanding access to hands-on training and creating pathways for more individuals to build meaningful careers in transportation and infrastructure,” said Jason Myers, Director of Technical Training at the McDonough Training Center.

House of Artists Foundation

The House of Artists Foundation empowers autistic youth and adults through a dynamic workforce development program that provides hands-on training, employment pathways, and community engagement in digital arts and public safety, in collaboration with over 100 partners including veterans, first responders, educators and families.

“The goal of this workshop and our organization overall is to get these artists exposed to real-world jobs they can strive toward. Now they know Norfolk Southern is an obtainable and fulfilling option to push their careers forward and empower them to contribute and make a difference in our community,” said Ashley Drayton, Chief Visionary Officer & President of the House of Artists Foundation.
