Ohio town safer thanks to Norfolk Southern-funded rescue tool

Orrville, Ohio — The Fire Department has enhanced its emergency response capabilities with a new set of “Jaws of Life,” funded through a grant provided by Norfolk Southern.
Why it matters: Car crashes remain one of the most dangerous risks people face daily. The Jaws of Life enables first responders to remove motorists quickly and safely from wrecked vehicles—saving critical time when every second counts.
The impact: Previously, the department had only one set of the tool. With the addition of a second, they can now respond to multiple emergencies simultaneously—without relying on neighboring departments for backup.
About the tool: The Jaws of Life is a battery-powered spreader capable of cutting through wreckage and rescuing individuals trapped in vehicles—even those submerged in water up to 11 feet deep.
What they’re saying:
“With the addition of this tool graciously funded by Norfolk Southern, the Orrville Fire Department not only runs the only true Heavy Rescue Company in Wayne County, but also the best equipped.”
— Craig Hostetler, Captain, Orrville Fire Department
