Team NS resilience shines through winter storm

The significant winter weather that moved across much of the country brought snow, ice, and frigid temperatures to every corner of our network.

Despite the size and scope of the storm — which included system‑wide impact — our teams responded safely, quickly and effectively to protect people, assets and operations.

While recovery efforts continue in a few areas, most operations have resumed and the network is largely back to business as usual, reflecting strong preparation, coordination, and disciplined execution. Teams across the system remain engaged to ensure every issue is addressed safely.

Operations, field support, and Commercial teams are working shoulder-to-shoulder — communicating in real time, aligning priorities, and keeping customers informed as conditions evolve.

The latest on our response

  • Engineering teams continue conducting around‑the‑clock cold patrol inspections across the system, clearing downed trees, repairing broken rail caused by extreme temperatures, restoring switch functionality, and deploying generators where power outages persist. Terminals continue clean-up efforts as conditions allow.
  • Mechanical continues to address cold‑weather impacts by troubleshooting frozen air systems, protecting fuel and electrical components, rotating power through hot‑storage facilities and supporting terminals impacted. Progress continues as access and generators come online.
  • Transportation and Network Operations professionals continue supporting the storm response through sustained, 24/7 coverage. Dispatchers provide constant network oversight, protecting train crews and frontline employees while coordinating the safe movement of freight as conditions allow.
  • Commercial partners have stayed closely aligned with Operations, ensuring customers receive timely updates and understand how safety and operational realities continue to guide our decisions.

The common thread: safety, service and teamwork

While recovery continues in several areas, the organization has responded safely, collaboratively, and effectively to an event that tested every corner of our network.

Thank you to our NS railroaders who stepped up, stayed vigilant, and kept the value of safety at the forefront of everything we do for our customers and the communities we serve.
