This Veterans Day, Norfolk Southern honors the veterans and active-duty service members whose leadership, discipline, and commitment continue to make a difference across our railroad.
From our rail yards to our offices and everywhere in between, more than 3,000 veterans and active-duty service members make up more than 16% of our workforce. Their military experiences bring skills that translate naturally to railroading, including teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, and a commitment to safety and service.
Earlier this year, Norfolk Southern was also recognized as a 2026 Top Veteran Employer by U.S. Veterans Magazine, recognizing the company’s commitment to recruiting, supporting and advancing veteran talent.
Extending our commitment beyond the railroad
Norfolk Southern’s support for the military community extends beyond our workforce.
Since 2020, Norfolk Southern has invested more than $815,000 in organizations that support veterans and military families, helping expand access to services, resources and opportunities for those who have served our country.
This year, that support includes a $100,000 grant to Hire Heroes USA to provide comprehensive career services connecting veterans, service members and military spouses with employment opportunities. Norfolk Southern also awarded a $50,000 grant to Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard to support food assistance, transportation, emergency shelter and other essential needs for veterans experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
That commitment also extends to the Trades on Track Scholarship Program. Across the program’s first two years, 11 military-connected students have accepted scholarships, including eight recipients who identified as active-duty service members, veterans or reservists and three military spouses or dependents.
Meet the veterans moving our railroad forward
Behind those numbers are railroaders whose experiences in the military continue to shape how they approach their work today.
This year, we're highlighting Team NS veterans representing different branches of military service and different roles across the railroad. Their stories show how lessons learned through service continue to influence how they lead, solve problems, work as a team, and keep the railroad moving.
