Western Pennsylvania nonprofits strengthened with new grants from Norfolk Southern

The Norfolk Southern Western Pennsylvania Community Support Fund has awarded its 2025 grants which address critical local needs and support nonprofits across Beaver and Lawrence counties.

Big picture: This is the third year of the program, which was established in 2023 with a $1 million donation to provide both immediate and lasting support to Western Pennsylvania communities, a portion of which was endowed for long-term support. Since the start of the program, Norfolk Southern has awarded $300,000 to 16 nonprofits.

Why it matters: Administered by The Pittsburgh Foundation, $750,000 of the donation was endowed to ensure continued nonprofit support for years to come. On behalf of Norfolk Southern, the Foundation distributes funds to nonprofits focused on basic human needs, health and wellness, community development, education, workforce and economic development, safety, sustainability, and the environment.

“We created this fund to invest in the long-term vitality of the Western Pennsylvania communities we serve, and it’s inspiring to see the continued impact as we enter the third year of the program,” said Kristin Wong, Director, Norfolk Southern Foundation and Community Impact. “We’re proud to continue supporting local organizations that are improving quality of life, expanding opportunities, and helping these communities thrive.”

“This type of long-term, flexible support is critical to driving change,” said Kelly Uranker, Vice President of Philanthropic Resources, The Pittsburgh Foundation. “It's rewarding to help direct these resources to organizations doing meaningful, community-centered work across Beaver and Lawrence counties.”

This initiative is part of NS’ broader community impact strategy. In 2024, we gave $18.3 million in charitable contributions across our 22-state network, including awarding over $6 million to more than 400 organizations through our Safety First and Thriving Communities Grants.
