Empowering changemakers: NS-supported civil and human rights center expands
On Nov. 4, Norfolk Southern joined civic leaders, community partners and educators in Atlanta for the ribbon cutting celebration of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights’ long-awaited expansion, a milestone that included the ribbon cutting of the newly named Freedom Room, made possible through Norfolk Southern’s $500,000 commitment.
Kristin Wong, Director NS Foundation and Community Impact, and Nate Smith, NS General Counsel, cut the ribbon to the newly updated Atlanta-based nonprofit.
Why it matters: The Freedom Room, one of three new learning spaces in the Center’s Shirley Clarke Franklin Pavilion, symbolizes the power of education and dialogue to create lasting change. The room will serve as a dynamic classroom where students, teachers and community groups can explore the stories and lessons of the civil and human rights movements — and connect them to the challenges and opportunities of today.
Zoom in: The Center’s 24,000-square-foot expansion marks a new chapter in its mission to inspire the changemaker in each of us. The project adds interactive galleries, classrooms, and community spaces designed to deepen the visitor experience and expand the Center’s national reach as a hub for education and engagement.
Zoom out: For Norfolk Southern, the moment reflects a deep and ongoing commitment to the communities we serve, and to advancing equity and opportunity through strategic philanthropy. As the Freedom Room opens its doors, it stands as a testament to what’s possible when organizations come together around shared values: progress, human dignity and the belief that history’s lessons can light the way forward.
