Fueling the future of skilled trades in Midland, Pennsylvania

Welding-Gang-2

MIDLAND, Pa – Norfolk Southern’s commitment to supporting skilled trades continues to create meaningful impact across our 22-state network.

In 2024, we awarded Midland Innovation & Technology Charter School (MITCS) in Midland, Pennsylvania, a $20,000 Thriving Communities grant to help establish its Welding Lab and Welding Careers Pathway program for students in grades 9-12. This investment empowers MITCS to inspire and prepare the next generation of welders through hands-on, career-focused training.

The Welding Lab and Welding Careers Pathway mark the next steps in positioning MITCS as a viable public education option for career-oriented high school students in Beaver County and across southwestern Pennsylvania. These additions are expected to boost enrollment and expand access to a valued skilled trade, giving more young people the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications alongside their Pennsylvania state high school diplomas.

A broader commitment

The grant reflects Norfolk Southern’s commitment to strengthening trade skill education, building on our support of related organizations and initiatives like City of Refuge, City Fields, and our Trades on Track Scholarship. Together, these investments are fueling the future of trade skills and creating new opportunities for the next generation of talent.

Applications are open for our Thriving Communities and Safety First grant programs through Sept. 1. We encourage all eligible organizations to apply on our company website: Grant Programs | Norfolk Southern.
