Behind the Scenes at Elkhart Terminal

Take a look inside our operations at Elkhart Terminal in Indiana.

Elkhart is one of our largest hump yards and a crucial component of the NS network.

More than 450 railroaders work here, including those from Maintenance of Way & Structures, Communications & Signals, Bridges & Buildings, as well as freight car repairers, electricians, machinists, laborers, engineers, conductors, and more.

This team handles the highest volume of freight across the NS system—processing westbound freight bound for interchange in Chicago and routing eastbound traffic across the NS network.

Top commodities moving through Elkhart include metal, aggregate, grain, and automotive freight. The terminal consists of the hump yard, a car shop, locomotive shop, and a mainline fuel pad.

Originally built in 1957 by the New York Central Railroad, Elkhart Terminal became part of Penn Central in 1968. Today, we’re proud to continue building on the legacy of our predecessor railroads here.

To our Elkhart team: thank you for keeping America moving safely and efficiently, 24/7, 365!
