Replacement work begins on Allegheny Commons pedestrian bridge
Construction has begun on the replacement of the Allegheny Commons Pedestrian Bridge, reconnecting the east and west portions of one of Pittsburgh’s most visible and well-loved park spaces. Originally built in the early 1900s, the bridge has been absent for more than a decade. When complete, the new bridge will improve walkability in the park, make it easier for families and visitors to access nearby destinations, and offer some of the best train viewing in the region.
Part of Norfolk Southern’s broader infrastructure work in Pittsburgh, the work reflects a shared focus on strengthening both community connections and network efficiency.
What to know
Work on the bridge began this month with concrete work focused on bridge supports and is expected to be completed in early 2027. The project brings back a long-awaited community asset in a highly visible and well-used public space.
Restoring a historic connection
Originally built in the early 1900s, the Allegheny Commons Pedestrian Bridge served as a key link within the park before being removed in 2013 due to its condition. When complete, it will sit above NS’ Fort Wayne Line and Conemaugh Line, primary routes for freight moving between the Midwest and East Coast.
The installation of the new bridge will:
- Reconnect two sides of Allegheny Commons Park
- Improve walkability for residents, families, and visitors
- Restore convenient access to nearby destinations like the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium and Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh
Working together
The project reflects collaboration between NS, PennDOT, the City of Pittsburgh, and numerous other agencies and organizations, aligning rail improvements with community priorities.
As construction begins this spring, the Allegheny Commons Pedestrian Bridge restoration represents more than a bridge replacement – it’s a project that reconnects neighborhoods, improves mobility, and supports a more efficient, modern rail network.
