Envision Unlimited expands lifesaving safety resources with Norfolk Southern grant support

Grants on Track - Envision Unlimited

Norfolk Southern’s commitment to safer, stronger communities is helping protect adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Last year, Envision Unlimited received a $5,000 Safety First grant, allowing the organization to purchase and install two automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This support expanded access to lifesaving emergency equipment for more than 100 adults and provided important skill training opportunities.

“Norfolk Southern is proud to continue its partnership with Envision Unlimited,” said Director of Norfolk Southern Foundation & Community Impact Kristin Wong. “Its programs promote independence and inclusion for individuals with IDD and we are excited to support opportunities for its members to grow and thrive.”

Since 2023, Norfolk Southern has committed a total of $20,000 to Envision Unlimited through its Thriving Communities and Safety First grant programs. The AEDs provided by the 2025 grant were installed at Envision Unlimited’s community centers, creating safe spaces across Metro Chicago and Central Illinois.

By providing immediate access to emergency cardiac care equipment, Norfolk Southern is helping reduce health risks and strengthen safety for participants, staff and visitors alike. For Envision Unlimited, the impact of the grant extends beyond the equipment itself. Clients were also invited to participate in AED training and learn how to respond during a cardiac emergency.

While some may underestimate the ability of adults with IDD to learn complex emergency-response skills, participants enthusiastically embraced the opportunity. They completed hands-on training, practiced using the AEDs and gained confidence in their ability to help others in a crisis. The experience was so meaningful that participants celebrated by baking heart-shaped cookies together.

The new AEDs not only provide critical emergency preparedness resources but also reinforce the confidence, independence and leadership of the individuals who use Envision Unlimited services every day.

“If there is a person next to you, you tell that person to call 911 and get an AED. You say, ‘Stay off, clear!’,” Marcelo, an Envision Unlimited member shared, “My mom was proud of me. I did a good job paying attention and listening.”

Applications for our Safety First and Thriving Communities grant programs are open now through August 3, 2026. For more information and to apply for a grant, visit here.
