With deep roots in American railroading, Altoona holds a special place on the Norfolk Southern network. For generations, the city has been home to the craftsmanship, innovation, and pride that continue to shape the railroad today.
“Altoona stands at the heart of America’s railroad legacy, and it’s fitting that we had an opportunity to celebrate that history by partnering with Union Pacific to bring Big Boy to the East Coast for the first time in more than 80 years,” said Mark George, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern. “As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence and Norfolk Southern approaches 200 years of service, this tour honors the railroaders, innovation, and partnerships that helped build America and continue to move it forward today.”
From employee celebrations to public events and a gathering at the iconic Horseshoe Curve, visitors experienced historic locomotives, commemorative rail equipment, and the craftsmanship of the Juniata Locomotive Shop, where Norfolk Southern's America250 locomotives were brought to life.
Employee and family celebration
Norfolk Southern employees and their families kicked off the multi-day event with a special evening celebrating the arrival of Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 in Altoona. The event brought employees together to experience the historic rail cars, connect with colleagues, and enjoy food trucks and family-friendly activities.
During the celebration, Norfolk Southern President and CEO Mark George thanked the railroaders whose dedication helped bring the event to life and recognized the generations of employees, retirees, and families who have shaped the company's legacy. He also acknowledged the hundreds of Norfolk Southern volunteers who helped make the events memorable for all.
Approximately 4,000 employees and family members attended.
